There is no question that we learn best by doing. We learn our table manners by eating dinner at the table. But we must also be instructed in how to use our forks and napkins, and how to keep the food off the floor! We learn the practices of our families by participating in family meals.
Wonders of Worship, or WOW, is a special way of participating in our services of worship. WOW gives children an opportunity to participate in worship as a vital part of the church family, while also providing an opportunity for young children to be instructed in the mechanics and traditions of worship.
There are three basic elements to the WOW program. During the worship services, children of any age (and their parents) can use the Wonders of Worship Children's Bulletin to help understand the parts of the worship service, music, and Scripture lessons. These bulletins can be read at home to reinforce worship lessons. The Children's Bulletins tell children the Worship Word for the day. These words describe the basic elements of Christian worship. The words may be reinforced in the Children's Message, the second element of WOW. This special time for children helps children feel included in the service and gain an understanding of the Scripture and other important lessons. The third part is the WOW Instruction Time, which happens during the sermon for children through third grade. Children focus on Worship Words during this time.
As children get older, their appreciation for worship will deepen if they are encouraged in this way. Worship can be an important part of the faith journeys of children, and a meaningful family activity.
